The Big Sunflower

And this picture just came out very nice! I'm very impressed with myself on this picture! : ) I love the sun shining through at the bottom of the photo!

Have a good weekend!!

Sunflowers make me happy!

I just love our sunflowers!! I am so glad we planted them! Our red and orange ones are beginning to open up by the house. They are beautiful! Every time I see them, I get in a better mood!

Did you know:
- a sunflower's head can grow to be as big as 2 feet across and the plant itself can be as tall as 18 feet?

- the sunflower is the state flower of Kansas and the national flower of Russia?

- the sunflower is not just one flower, but a cluster of tiny flowers called florets? The yellow petals are actually protective leaves that cover the center of the head while it is growing, and the brown center is composed of a mass of hundreds of flowers, all growing individually.

- remains of sunflower seeds found in archaeological digs in North America date them as nearly 3,000 years old?

- in the past, stems of sunflowers were used inside life jackets?
(facts taken from http://www.sunflowerguide.com/facts-about-sunflowers.html , http://www.hotfact.com/facts_about_sunflowers.html , and http://sunflowerfestival.tripod.com/sunflower_facts.htm .)

A few sunflowers have more than one sunflower head coming off the stem.

And this is one of the really big ones. It may not look that big in the picture, but it's the tallest and the biggest sunflower head that we have. I'll have to put a ruler up to it and take a picture so you can tell how big it really is!

We have a bed!

Well, we've always had a bed, but never a bed frame with headboard and footboard. But we do now!! And I love it!
However, our bed is a full size bed, and the frame is made for a queen size bed. So.... we have a little bit of extra space. But we found something to fill it!

We also got another washer and dryer. Our washer quit measuring the water level. It would always fill up to the top. And the dryer would never stop running. We always had to open the door to make it stop running.

AND, one more thing... : )  Our sunflowers by the house are beginning to bloom! And the are getting so tall!

We are suppose to have some red and orange sunflowers too, but none of those have bloomed yet. Hopefully they will soon!!  Have a good day!

A long night, but a beautiful morning

I had a long night of shelling peas and shucking corn last night! And tonight I'll be conquering tomatoes! But in between the shelling and the shucking, I did have a little time to play around with my sbcStudio software by Creative Memories. Check out my new desktop background!

I also had a nice surprise this morning when I walked into the kitchen. Ragan wasn't able to help me last night because he had his own project to work on. He and a few friends have been working on a deck they'll be taking to their boat house real soon. Because of that, he's been getting home very late. I think the clock almost said 1 am last night when he finally crawled into bed. But here's what I found when I walked into my kitchen this morning.

A beautiful sunflower! He can be so sweet sometimes! : )

Have a good day!

My husband....

had a nice surprise for me the other evening. I came home from work, and as soon as I walked in the house, he made me close my eyes. He guided me over to the couch, and when I opened my eyes, there was a big spider-man gift bag on the couch! I always did like spider-man.... : )  Inside was a sweet card, a flat skillet, and sunflower seeds!
Sorry, no picture of the skillet. I used it this morning....

So, I was thinking of how to arrange the flowers in the yard. Any suggestions? Should I group them all together? Or spread them out? Should they be in the middle of the yard or along the house? I would rather have them in the front yard so people could see them as they drive by; although Ragan said they would probably do better in the back yard because they would get the most sunlight back there. He got so many of them, I can probably put some in the front and in the back. One idea I had was to line the driveway with sunflowers! Wouldn't that be so neat to leave your house in the morning for work, and drive down your driveway through sunflowers! I think so. : )

But don't worry; I'll definitely be taking a lot of pictures of them when they start growing, so you'll see what we decide to do with them!
Have a good day!
